Richmond police release bodycam footage in fatal shooting of Marine during mental crisis

San Francisco, CALocal News

Richmond police officers shot and killed Angel Montano, a 27-year-old military veteran, on August 4 during a mental health crisis. Montano's brother called 911, stating that Montano was armed with knives and threatening to kill him and their mother. Officers responded but waited outside for less-lethal options; however, they entered when Montano advanced toward them with weapons. Montano died at the scene, prompting expressions of sorrow from Police Chief Bisa French regarding the family's attempts to seek help for him. Lt.

Donald Patchin confirmed that the department had previously responded to mental health-related incidents at the residence. This shooting follows another incident earlier this year involving Officer Nicholas Remick, raising concerns about police response in mental health crises. A GoFundMe account has been set up to cover Montano's funeral expenses, reflecting community support. The Richmond Police Department, along with the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office, is conducting an investigation into the shooting.
