Attorneys for Sheriff Corpus maneuver ahead of hearing that could remove her from office

San Francisco, CALocal News

At a San Mateo County Board of Supervisors meeting, Sheriff Christina Corpus' legal team sought to delay her removal proceedings as allegations of misconduct surface. Voters approved Measure A in March, granting supervisors the authority to remove the sheriff under specific circumstances. The upcoming hearing, set to last 10 days, will address claims made in a 400-page investigation led by retired judge LaDoris Cordell, which alleges an inappropriate relationship between Corpus and her chief of staff, Victor Aenlle. Attorney Tom Perez, a recent addition to Corpus' defense team, argued for the civil grand jury trial to be held first to allow community input. The board plans to proceed with the Measure A hearing despite Corpus' attorneys' requests.

Corpus, who has fought against removal attempts through multiple legal avenues, emphasizes her commitment to transparency and public engagement. She reversed her earlier decision to keep the hearing closed, stating, "Let the public see the facts. " The proceedings highlight the ongoing tension between elected officials and community oversight mechanisms.
