Meet the man crawling across Bayview mudflats at 5 a.m. for science
Jivan Khakee surveys the Olympia oyster reef at Bayview’s Heron’s Head Park, where oyster density has dramatically increased. The restoration project, part of a shoreline resilience initiative funded by Measure AA, aims to enhance coastal protection and restore local biodiversity. In 2024, Khakee and his team recorded an average of 1,006 oysters per square meter, surpassing expectations with a 250% increase since 2023. The project employs innovative methods, including placing 200-pound concrete structures to provide necessary shade and habitat for the oysters. Oysters are vital for coastal ecosystems, as they help protect shorelines from erosion and mitigate storm surges.
Khakee’s team counts a variety of marine life during their surveys, contributing valuable data for the project. The Wild Oyster Project, which Khakee works for, collaborates with local restaurants to recycle oyster shells, further supporting the reef's growth. The ongoing monitoring efforts are essential for understanding the reef’s health and ensuring its sustainability.
