Monday is National 811 Day, a reminder to call before you dig to avoid utility damage

San Francisco, CALocal News

National 811 Day on August 11 serves as a reminder for residents to contact 811 before starting any digging projects. PG&E reported nearly 300 digging incidents in the Bay Area during the first six months of the year, leading to damage to gas and electric lines 471 times across its service area. Alarmingly, 90% of residential diggers failed to call 811 beforehand, which is crucial as utility lines can be only inches below the surface. Calling 811 ensures that utility professionals mark the locations of underground lines at no charge, helping to prevent costly repairs that average $3,500. Common activities that require a call to 811 include landscaping, fence building, and construction.

PG&E emphasizes the importance of this service to protect both property and safety. The high percentage of unreported digging incidents highlights the need for increased awareness. Residents are urged to take advantage of this free service to avoid potential hazards.
