At Sonoma-Marin Fair, rescue pup Petunia steals judges hearts in Ugliest Dog Contest

San Francisco, CALocal News

Petunia, a hairless French bulldog mix, won the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair, earning a $5,000 cash prize and a merchandise deal with Mug Root Beer. Rescued from a hoarder breeder in Las Vegas, Petunia's unique appearance captured the judges' hearts, with one describing her as "the most wrinkled 2-year-old" they had ever seen. The contest featured other unique dogs, including Jinny Lu, a pug with a micro-jaw who took second place and received the Spirit award based on audience cheers. The annual event aims to promote dog adoption and rescue efforts in the Sonoma area, with many participants attending simply to showcase their unconventional looks. Michelle Grady, director of The Pug Hotel, noted that events like these help raise awareness for adoption and rescue initiatives.

Petunia will also be featured on custom merchandise, including limited edition cans of Mug Root Beer and dog toys. The contest continues to draw attention to the joys of adopting special needs pets. Petunia's journey from rescue to recognition exemplifies the positive impact of community support for animal welfare.
