Santa Clara County ranch manager charged with animal cruelty in death of horse
Jennifer Bryant, 25, the manager of Chaparral Ranch, faces charges of misdemeanor animal cruelty after the death of a horse named Honey due to malnutrition and heat stroke. The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office noted that Bryant failed to provide adequate care despite clear veterinary recommendations. In March 2024, animal control officers responded to complaints and found Honey in distress, yet no follow-up care was arranged by Bryant. Instead, she relocated the horse to another ranch, where it was later discovered very thin and unable to stand. A veterinarian suggested a follow-up appointment for Honey, but evidence indicated that Bryant ignored this advice.
On the day Honey was euthanized, Bryant claimed the horse's condition was due to allergies, despite knowing about Honey's declining health. District Attorney Jeff Rosen stated that Honey's death was preventable and highlighted the need for proper animal care. Bryant's arraignment is set for Monday, where she could face up to one year in jail if convicted.
