Casual Carpool is Back, Set to Launch Tuesday in Oaklands Grand Lake Neighborhood
Casual Carpool will relaunch in Oakland on Tuesday, reviving a commuting tradition that paused during the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizer Camille Bermudez announced the initiative, focusing on the Lake Park parking lot as the primary pick-up location after a survey indicated strong support. The revival aims to assist an estimated 332,000 workers returning to the office this fall, coinciding with the end of the Clean Air Vehicle Decal program. Enhanced protocols will help riders and drivers communicate their COVID-19 preferences and payment expectations. Bermudez highlighted rising tolls and public transportation costs as factors making this revival timely.
She also mentioned a desire to secure funding for additional locations and a security guard to oversee the carpool line. The Casual Carpool's return reflects a community effort to adapt to changing commuting needs. Bermudez's personal history with the carpool has motivated her to bring it back, believing the time is ripe for its revival.
