Ready to renovate Developer gets tax credit to rehab historic Marin City housing complex
Marin City’s Golden Gate Village housing complex will undergo a $266. 6 million renovation, beginning with Phase 1 in February 2026. This phase will focus on upgrading 88 of the complex's 296 mid-century units, enhancing kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor spaces for the residents. Burbank Housing announced that the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee approved a $3. 9 million federal tax credit to support the project.
An investor will provide $35 million, complemented by $33 million from tax-exempt bonds and additional funding sources. Longtime resident Neil Hammari expressed gratitude for the community, looking forward to returning to a newly renovated home. The project, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright protégé Aaron Green in 1961, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. By 2027, the developers plan to initiate Phase 2, requiring a similar financing process. This renovation is crucial for the 300 low-income families currently residing in the complex.
