Historic peace boat tours San Francisco Bay, advocating for a world without nuclear war
Golden Rule, a 34-foot wooden sailboat, reached San Francisco’s Pier 39 on August 7, 2025, to promote peace and a nuclear-free world. Originally launched in 1958 to protest nuclear testing, the boat was restored by Veterans for Peace and various community volunteers. The upcoming voyage will feature public events and sailing opportunities, fostering discussions about nuclear threats and environmental issues. Project manager Michelle Marsonette noted the significance of including groups like the “Comfort Women” Justice Coalition to address wartime atrocities. Gerry Condon, president of the Golden Rule committee, pointed out that the substantial funding for nuclear weapons diverts resources from essential services like healthcare and housing.
Dominick Favuzzi emphasized the environmental damage caused by military bases in Northern California, which still pose cleanup challenges. The grassroots organization World BEYOND War supports these efforts by raising awareness of the environmental impact of military operations. The initiative aims to engage younger generations in critical discussions about America's role in global relations and the dangers of nuclear armament.
