Ruth Asawas granddaughter shows portraits at SFs Hunters Point
Lilli Lanier presented her latest origami portrait series at Cafe Alma in San Francisco on July 26, 2025, featuring her grandmother Ruth Asawa as the signature piece. The exhibition includes portraits of renowned figures like Stephen Curry and Frida Kahlo, emphasizing community values important to Lanier. Each artwork, including the Asawa portrait crafted from 15,000 origami pieces, showcases her ability to simplify complex images into vibrant designs. "Grandma Ruth taught me the origami fold when I was a kid," Lanier recalled, highlighting the personal connection to her work. The show runs until September 1, 2025, offering local art enthusiasts a chance to witness her creativity.
Lanier's "Origami la Virgen de Guadalupe" consists of an impressive 20,000 pieces, underscoring her dedication to the craft. The event attracted engaged guests, including Victor Young, Sr. , who discussed the Asawa portrait with his daughter. Asawa, a celebrated Japanese-American artist, currently has a retrospective displayed at SFMOMA.
