San Jose expands effort to train city staffers how to use AI tech to improve work efficiency

San Francisco, CALocal News

San Jose is expanding its AI training programs for city staff, with the goal of training at least 1,000 employees by the end of 2026. Mayor Matt Mahan revealed that 80 staffers have already completed training in Generative Pre-trained Transformers, which enhance job efficiency. The city offers two courses: the AI Upskilling Program for general staff and the Data Upskilling Program for employees who work with data. Mahan highlighted the programs' successes, including a grant for electric vehicle chargers and a more efficient categorization system in the city’s 311 reporting, which saved 500 staff hours. An additional 30 employees are scheduled to start training this fall.

Training 1,000 staffers would represent approximately 15% of the city's workforce. The initiative aims to improve city services and reduce costs through effective AI utilization. These programs reflect a growing commitment to integrating technology into municipal operations.
