Santa Clara seeks applicants for committee that will propose amendment to city charter

San Francisco, CALocal News

Santa Clara has opened applications for a 13-member Charter Review Committee that will propose amendments to the city charter. The City Council established this committee in July to identify provisions that require clarification or modification to comply with state law. Six members will be nominated by the City Council, one by the mayor, and six will be chosen by lottery from each council district. The committee's recommendations will be presented to the City Council for consideration, with potential voter approval in the November 2026 election. The city charter, which serves as the governing document of Santa Clara, was first adopted in 1951 and has undergone several amendments.

Monthly committee meetings will begin in September, culminating in a final meeting in July 2026 to finalize proposed amendments. Subcommittees will be formed to address specific issues, though their meetings will not be open to the public. Residents can apply online or in person at the City Clerk’s Office, with any inquiries directed to the office at (408) 615-2220.
