Modern aircraft join Cal Fires world-leading firefighting fleet as peak fire season begins
Cal Fire has enhanced its aerial firefighting capabilities by introducing two Sikorsky S-70i Firehawk helicopters, which can carry over 1,000 gallons of water and operate at night. This significant upgrade, announced by Governor Gavin Newsom, replaces older Vietnam-era Bell Hueys that have served for over four decades. The new helicopters feature advanced safety, range, and speed, making them vital for combating wildfires during California's peak fire season. Chief Joe Tyler emphasized their role in supporting firefighting efforts and protecting both residents and resources. The agency operates more than 60 aircraft, and these Firehawks will improve pre-positioning strategies during high fire risk periods.
Chris Renner, a Cal Fire pilot, praised the agency's reputation for maintaining a high-quality air fleet and the training provided to personnel. Newsom also acknowledged the hard work of Cal Fire crews as they prepare for the current fire season. The addition of these helicopters represents a proactive step in enhancing California's firefighting capabilities.
