Terriers Take on Vallejo Ferry Terminal, Nab an Impressive 27 Rats in 90 Minutes

San Francisco, CALocal News

The Sacramento Canines’ Rat Annihilation Team (SCRAT) deployed trained terriers to the Vallejo Ferry Terminal, capturing 57 rats in response to a significant infestation that emerged in mid-July. Founder Emily Iniguez stressed the benefits of using dogs over toxic rat poison, highlighting the dangers it poses to local wildlife. Community members showed enthusiasm for the canine efforts, with many stopping to watch and cheer as the dogs worked. Initial pest control measures included pesticide treatments and sanitation upgrades, but the canine intervention provided additional support to combat the problem. New employees, like Ryder Lopez, reported alarming rat sightings, noting he saw up to 15 rats on his first day.

The ongoing pest issue suggests that the infestation has persisted for some time, prompting the need for a comprehensive pest control strategy. SCRAT's intervention reflects a growing trend to prioritize humane and environmentally friendly pest management solutions. The success of this initiative may encourage similar efforts in other affected areas.
