Grounded in joy and justice, Black Cultural Zone deepens its roots in East Oakland

The Black Cultural Zone Community Development Corporation revitalizes East Oakland through community events, live music, and local resources. CEO Carolyn Johnson emphasizes the need for equitable access to community resources that have been lost over the years. The organization connects residents to essential services, fostering economic development and community pride. “Saturdays in THE ZONE” features local vendors, free meals, and community support, enhancing local engagement. Johnson recalls a time when East Oakland had more amenities, driving her commitment to revitalization.

The organization collaborates with around 50 local agencies to address housing and health care needs. Community members, like Blanca Gordo and Ari Curry, highlight the positive impact of the initiative on job opportunities and family stability. This work aims to restore pride and opportunity for future generations in East Oakland.
