LIVE UPDATES Tsunami warnings, watches, advisories were given to 14 of the Earth after 8.8 quake
An 8. 8 magnitude earthquake off the Russian Far East generated a tsunami impacting regions across Russia, Japan, Hawaii, and the U. S. West Coast. The Bay Area has lifted its tsunami advisory, with reports indicating only minor effects such as waves reaching up to 4 feet in Crescent City.
Authorities in Hawaii and parts of Japan and Russia downgraded their tsunami warnings, while Chile increased its alert level and evacuated hundreds. Experts, including USC professor Costas Synolakis, cautioned that a quarter of the globe remains under some advisory, emphasizing the potential for strong currents even if wave heights appear minimal. Eric Geist from the USGS noted that tsunamis often do not present as breaking waves, making them difficult to gauge visually. Crescent City experienced swift currents but less damage compared to the 2011 tsunami, which inflicted $87 million in losses. Local residents have resumed normal activities despite the tsunami's arrival.
Comprehensive damage assessments will take time as some areas have yet to be impacted.
