San Francisco to start issuing speed camera tickets next week
San Francisco will begin issuing fines for speeding drivers next week, with penalties ranging from $50 to $500. The city has installed 33 speed cameras, which have reportedly reduced speeding incidents by 30% during their trial period. Approximately 70% of drivers caught speeding do not repeat the offense, indicating the cameras' effectiveness. In addition to the cameras, SFMTA is taking steps to enhance safety at problematic intersections by increasing the size of speed limit signs and adding more frequent roadway markings. Luke Bornheimer, executive director of Streets Forward, supports the speed camera initiative but calls for additional measures to improve roadway safety for all users, including pedestrians and cyclists.
He advocates for protected bike lanes and transit-only lanes, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to safety. The speed camera program is expected to conclude in March 2030, with the potential to generate significant revenue from citations. Enhanced enforcement aims to reduce speeding and improve overall safety on city streets.
