The Sun Ra Arkestra kicks off a series of frill-filled shows at SFJazz
The Sun Ra Arkestra began their San Francisco show series at SFJazz, blending big band swing with experimental jazz. Dressed in bedazzled costumes, the 19 musicians created a theatrical experience that paid homage to their founder, Sun Ra. Knoell Scott, the current bandleader, referred to the group as a "Chicago jump band with frills," reflecting their unique style. Despite their energetic performance, the audience displayed a lack of engagement, possibly due to unfamiliarity with the band's innovative sound. The Arkestra has a storied history, rooted in the Afrofuturism movement, and has influenced various artists and cultural movements.
They will present different themed performances over the weekend, including a salute to their 101-year-old leader, Marshall Allen. Sun Ra's vision of a Black utopia continues to resonate, as the Arkestra strives to carry on his legacy. The juxtaposition of the band's vibrant energy and the audience's lethargy highlights the challenges of experimental jazz in contemporary settings.
