More shawarmas coming to 19th and Valencia
SF Grill will open on August 15 at 799 Valencia St. , revitalizing a site known for Mediterranean cuisine for over 40 years. Co-owner Diaa Askandafi, who grew up in Syria, aims to serve dishes that echo his childhood experiences, emphasizing handmade recipes and fresh ingredients. The menu will include shawarmas, kebabs, grilled salmon, gyros, and American options like burgers and cheesesteaks. Askandafi and his business partner, Mohamed Ismail, both chefs with 25 years of experience, previously operated Ted’s Market in SoMa, which lacked space for menu expansion.
Valencia Street's vibrant atmosphere and recent efforts to attract crowds influenced their decision to open SF Grill. However, Askandafi noted the challenges posed by rising costs, which make it difficult to maintain affordability. He expressed a commitment to using homemade spices sourced from farmers in his homeland. Askandafi aspires to become a go-to destination for authentic Syrian and Lebanese cuisine in the Mission District.
