A new boatbuilding school is getting Bayview teens on board

San Francisco, CALocal News

Mekhi Spencer, a 17-year-old trainee at Rocking the Boat's Bayview workshop, confidently uses power tools as he learns boatbuilding skills. The program, which opened in October 2024, aims to provide local teens with equitable access to boating, promoting it as a valuable pastime for all. Rocking the Boat's Bronx location boasts a 94% high school graduation rate among participants, compared to 57% for the broader community. Chief Program Officer Chris Childers emphasizes a philosophy of deep education, with a low instructor-to-student ratio that fosters individualized attention. The curriculum focuses on essential skills such as measuring, basic math, and collaboration, which are vital for both boatbuilding and future endeavors.

Instructors like Ellen Cohen, who benefited from similar programs, stress the confidence gained through teamwork and communication in sailing. The initiative addresses community needs by ensuring access to the coastline and promoting comfort in the water. Rocking the Boat not only teaches practical skills but also supports personal growth for its students.
