Redwood City Couple Accused of Human Trafficking After Hiring Nanny From China
Qi Li, 35, and Jie Xu, 37, are facing serious human trafficking charges in San Mateo County due to their alleged mistreatment of a nanny from China. The unnamed 53-year-old woman reported being forced to work up to 20 hours a day, with the couple demanding she perform housework in addition to caring for their infant. She stated that they restricted her freedom and took her passport upon her arrival in June 2024. The situation intensified when the couple blamed her for their child's illness, leading to a violent threat from Li. Following the hospitalization of the baby, the nanny confided in hospital staff about her abusive treatment.
Authorities were notified, resulting in Li's arrest on August 21, 2024. After posting bail, both Li and Xu are out of custody and scheduled for court appearances. This case highlights ongoing issues related to labor exploitation and human trafficking in domestic work.
