Bay Area congressmembers call for NOAA investigation into rising whale deaths
Bay Area congressmembers urged the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to investigate the alarming rise in gray whale deaths, which have reached their highest level in 25 years. The letter, led by Rep. Sam Liccardo, expressed the need for clarity on the causes and adequate staffing for investigations. Scientists reported 21 gray whale deaths this year, the highest since 2000, with the latest death attributed to a suspected vessel strike. The congressmembers raised concerns about NOAA’s delayed responses to whale strandings, questioning its capacity to meet obligations under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
They stressed that immediate action is necessary to safeguard the long-term survival of gray whales. The Marine Mammal Center has called for public awareness among boaters during this critical period. NOAA has committed to working with Congress to address these inquiries. Addressing the rising mortality rate is vital for maintaining marine biodiversity and the health of ocean ecosystems.
