Planned Parenthood of California loses 300M in federal funding under court order

San Francisco, CALocal News

California Planned Parenthood lost $300 million in federal funding under a court order that allows funds to be withheld during an ongoing lawsuit against the Trump Administration. Planned Parenthood argues that the funding ban violates its First Amendment rights and the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment. Judge Indira Talwani noted a “substantial likelihood of success” for Planned Parenthood's case but only temporarily blocked the law for a small number of clinics. None of California's health centers are included in the temporary relief, which affects services for over 1 million patients, 80% of whom rely on Medi-Cal. Hicks stated that the funding loss will have severe repercussions for low-income individuals who depend on these health services.

The national Planned Parenthood federation remains hopeful for a future ruling that will block the funding cuts for its California members. The U. S. Department of Health and Human Services criticized the ruling and plans to appeal. The organization provides a range of services, with less than 10% of visits related to abortions, highlighting its crucial role in reproductive health care.
