S.F. homeless families can stay in shelters for longer after pushback
San Francisco's new shelter policy, effective October 1, will allow homeless families to stay in shelters for 90 days with unlimited extensions, a shift from the previous limit of 30-day extensions. Families currently residing in shelters will receive a blanket 90-day extension to facilitate the transition. Mayor Daniel Lurie emphasized the compassionate intent behind the policy, which seeks to support families making progress toward permanent housing. The change follows community protests after some families received eviction notices despite assurances of support from the mayor. District 9 Supervisor Jackie Fielder introduced legislation to expand shelter stays, highlighting the need for more comprehensive solutions.
The policy is backed by $30 million secured for housing families and transitional-aged youth, derived from Proposition C funds. This funding aims to address long waitlists for family shelters by investing in permanent housing solutions. Lurie noted that the policy encourages effective government action through feedback and collaboration with stakeholders.
