Public hearing highlights safety gaps at Martinez fuel facility following 2023 fire

San Francisco, CALocal News

A safety assessment of the Martinez Renewable Fuels facility highlights critical gaps in safety culture and communication following a fire in November 2023 that hospitalized a worker. The Contra Costa Health-commissioned report, discussed during a public hearing, indicates the facility falls short of industry benchmarks for safety management. The assessment recommends nine steps, focusing on three key areas: prioritizing safety resources, fostering a culture where employees feel safe reporting issues, and enhancing communication. Supervisor Shanelle Scales-Preston stated that implementing these recommendations is essential for progress. The public hearing saw limited participation, with only three comments, primarily from facility staff.

Chris Staats, the plant manager, affirmed the facility's dedication to safety and trust-building through transparent actions. The U. S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board had previously published a report on the fire incident. The public comment period for the assessment is open until August 21, allowing community input on safety improvements.
