Trump admin. has fired four S.F. immigration judges since April
The Trump administration terminated four immigration judges in San Francisco, including Ila Deiss, who had granted asylum in 93. 7% of her cases since 2019. Judges Roger Dinh, Elisa Brasil, and Jami Vigil were also dismissed in April, just shy of completing their two-year probationary period. This brings the total number of vacancies in San Francisco's immigration court to nine out of 26 courtrooms. Across the nation, at least 17 immigration judges have been fired in 10 states since Monday, according to the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers.
The firings coincide with reports of ICE arresting asylum-seekers during court hearings. Milli Atkinson from the Bar Association of San Francisco confirmed another judge's firing in Concord this week. The Executive Office for Immigration Review has not commented on the firings. These dismissals raise concerns about the impact on asylum adjudication and the overall immigration process.
