21-Year-Old Charged With Murder for Shooting Woman Walking Her Dogs In San Leandro
Rohith Sunil, 21, faces murder charges for fatally shooting Casey Way, 41, while she walked her dogs in San Leandro last Thursday night. The shooting occurred shortly after a brief conversation between Sunil and Way's boyfriend on East 14th Street. Security footage captured the moments leading up to the shooting, where Sunil shot Way in the torso and fled the scene in a white vehicle. Way was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to her injuries. Sunil was arrested the following day and could receive a sentence of 50 years to life in prison if convicted.
Alameda County DA Ursula Jones Dickson is charging him with murder, assault with a semi-automatic weapon, and carrying a loaded weapon in public. The incident has heightened concerns in San Leandro, as it marks the second fatal shooting of a dog walker in the area within a month. Police confirmed there is no connection between the two shootings, but community tensions remain high.
