In East Bay appearance, journalist Lisa Ling dishes on career, politics, societal isolation
Lisa Ling captivated an audience at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek, sharing insights on her career and societal challenges. She pointed out a troubling disconnection in society, despite our digital connections, stating, “We are lonelier, we are angrier, and more divided than I’ve ever seen in my lifetime. " Ling's talk highlighted Civicorps, a nonprofit focused on education and job readiness for young adults. She recounted her sister Laura's harrowing capture in North Korea while reporting on refugees, emphasizing the dangerous role of a fixer who misled them. Ling explained how former President Bill Clinton's negotiation for her sister's release was influenced by Kim Jong Il's desire to meet him.
She also reflected on her experiences in Iran, where she witnessed the impact of American pop culture on young women. Ling discussed historical injustices faced by Asian Americans, including the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. Her reflections served as a reminder of the importance of connection and understanding in a divided society.
