The Missions largest open street event returns
Sunday Streets revitalized Valencia Street in the Mission, transforming it into a dynamic, car-free space for community activities and connection. Organized by Livable City since 2008, the event emphasized inclusivity and safety for immigrant communities amid ongoing fears regarding ICE activity. “In this particularly difficult political time, I think it’s important to foster community resilience and trust in each other’s neighbors,” said Sally Chen, deputy director of Livable City. Despite a challenging budget year, organizers attracted large crowds, with hundreds filling the street by midday. The event featured two entertainment hubs, offering performances, health resources, and family bike courses, illustrating the community's resilience.
Local vendors added to the vibrant atmosphere, showcasing the area's diversity. Sustaining Sunday Streets has proven difficult, as Chen noted the necessity of fundraising to cover operating costs. “We’re hanging on as best we can to keep offering this level of programming,” she stated.
