Turbulent times for Avelo Airlines result in its departure from Sonomas regional airport

San Francisco, CALocal News

Avelo Airlines will stop all service at Sonoma County’s Regional Airport on August 11, leaving Alaska Airlines and American Airlines as the only commercial options. The airline's communications manager cited insufficient financial returns as the reason for the decision amid a competitive landscape. Avelo had quickly become the airport's second-largest operator since its 2021 launch, attracting passengers seeking alternatives to larger Bay Area airports. Financial troubles have plagued Avelo, with a reported net loss of $17 million in the first quarter of 2025. Despite the setback, airport manager Jon Stout expressed confidence that the impact would be small due to the airport's diverse revenue streams.

Other airline partners plan to expand service, helping to offset the loss of Avelo flights. Approximately 20 Avelo employees remain at the airport, with some offered positions at other locations. Local partners are also looking to hire some of the laid-off staff, providing additional support in the transition.
