Day 124 at the 16th St. Plaza East side of Mission St. resists change
The Department of Public Works and the San Francisco Police Department maintained a clear west side of Mission Street for the second weekend in a row, aided by the new outreach team Ahsing. This team focused on cleaning up trash and reducing loitering along Capp Street, prompting some vendors to leave when they approached. However, unpermitted vending and open drug use persisted in the northeast plaza and on the east side of Mission Street after cleanup crews departed. Police presence included a Mobile Unit and a patrol car, yet issues continued on the east side. An arrest took place on Caledonia Street Saturday morning, emphasizing the persistent safety challenges in the area.
The ongoing efforts reflect a broader struggle to manage public spaces effectively. Local authorities aim to balance community needs with safety, as they navigate complex social issues. This situation raises questions about the effectiveness of current strategies in addressing homelessness and drug use.
