Oakland partners with nonprofit foundations to deliver funding to arts and culture orgs
Oakland's arts and culture organizations will receive $600,000 in emergency grants through a collaboration with the East Bay Community Foundation. This funding aims to assist two dozen groups impacted by recent budget cuts to the arts sector as the City Council sought to close a significant budget deficit. Each organization can receive up to $28,500, with funds provided by nine different foundations. Brandi Howard, EBCF's president and CEO, highlighted the need to support local cultural organizations during challenging times. The grants will be administered in coordination with the city's Cultural Affairs Division.
These organizations play a vital role in connecting approximately 600 local artists who contribute to performances, exhibitions, and community workshops. Mayor Barbara Lee described the cultural organizations as essential to the vitality of Oakland neighborhoods. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to sustaining the arts amid financial challenges.
