San Francisco wildlife refuge looking for volunteers to foster orphaned possums

San Francisco, CALocal News

The Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue in San Francisco urgently seeks volunteers to foster orphaned opossums, which are often unfairly stigmatized. Founder Lila Travis expressed that the organization relies entirely on volunteers to provide care for the wildlife, especially during peak times of displacement caused by human activities. Opossums serve as crucial garbage cleaners and help maintain healthy ecosystems by controlling pests. Regular fosterer Kitty Jones has been instrumental in caring for these animals, stating, "To compensate for the neglect and mistreatment they experience. " Recently, she successfully released a litter of eight opossums into a Marin forest, which brought her joy and a sense of accomplishment.

The rising number of calls for opossum rescues reflects the growing need for community support in wildlife rehabilitation. As human activities increase, the rescue's mission becomes even more critical for the survival of these animals. The organization encourages local residents to get involved and help foster the misunderstood creatures.
