49ers hall-of-famer Jerry Rice welcomes Special Olympics athlete ambassadors to SFO

San Francisco, CALocal News

Jerry Rice visited San Francisco International Airport to promote the expansion of United Airlines' Special Olympics Service Ambassador (SOSA) program. The initiative, launched in 2019, provides Special Olympics athletes, such as Chris McElroy, with part-time jobs and full employee benefits. United plans to hire four ambassadors at SFO and expand the program to all seven of its hubs, including new locations in Los Angeles and Newark. Travelers at the airport expressed their excitement upon meeting Rice, with one mother of an autistic child sharing her emotional connection to the program. Rice commended the ambassadors, stating, "Their personality, they're always happy," emphasizing the positive impact they have on others.

This expansion reflects United's commitment to inclusivity and community support. The program not only helps athletes gain valuable work experience but also raises awareness about the capabilities of individuals with special needs. United hopes to have the program operational later this year.
