San Jose homeless population is still rising despite more temporary, permanent housing
San Jose's homeless population has risen to 6,503, an increase of 237 since 2023. Approximately 60% of these individuals remain unsheltered, despite significant investments in temporary and permanent housing. Mayor Matt Mahan stated that every city must take responsibility for addressing homelessness, emphasizing the urgency of bringing people indoors. Santa Clara County's homeless count reached 10,711, exceeding the previous two-year figure by over 800. The county has constructed over 1,300 affordable apartments funded by a $950 million housing bond, yet challenges like wage gaps persist.
Officials reported helping more than 8,000 individuals transition from homelessness to housing between 2023 and 2025. Plans are underway to open additional shelter sites this year, including emergency interim housing and hotel conversions. Sandy Perry from the South Bay Community Land Trust stressed the necessity of expanding permanent housing alongside temporary solutions.
