Mayor Lurie Celebrates Opening of San Francisco Disability Cultural Center
The San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (DCC) inaugurated as the first publicly funded disability cultural center in the U. S. , a landmark achievement in the disability rights movement. Funded by the Department of Disability and Aging Services, the DCC aims to provide inclusive programming for the disability community, both in-person and virtually. Mayor Daniel Lurie underscored the center's commitment to fostering community and collaboration, emphasizing its welcoming design features.
Located within The Kelsey Civic Center, the DCC includes an event space, a hybrid meeting room, and a patio for immunocompromised guests. The opening coincides with the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, highlighting the ongoing fight for disability rights. District 5 Supervisor Bilal Mahmood praised the center as a model for other cities. The DCC has already engaged nearly 5,000 individuals through virtual programming since its launch in 2024. Leaders expect the center to play a pivotal role in advancing accessibility and inclusion within civic life.
