Former SF Parks Alliance CEO Faces the Music Over Misused Millions at Angry City Hall Committee Hearing

San Francisco, CALocal News

SF Parks Alliance CEO Drew Becher faced a hostile inquiry from San Francisco supervisors over the misappropriation of $4 million intended for community park projects. The nonprofit's financial scandal has left numerous neighborhood groups unable to access their funds, with summer movie events in city parks canceled as a result. SF District Attorney and City Attorney investigations have been launched, and Mayor Lurie has withdrawn all city funding, leading to the nonprofit's closure in June. During the hearing, Becher struggled to explain the whereabouts of the misused funds, stating, “I don’t exactly know where all of it is. ” Supervisor Stephen Sherrill expressed disbelief, suggesting the operations resembled a Ponzi scheme.

The supervisors have vowed to investigate further, with Supervisor Shamann Walton calling for testimony from Parks Alliance leaders. Community groups have expressed frustration over the organization's handling of funds, suggesting that improprieties were known for years. As the fallout continues, the city officials aim to hold those responsible accountable.
