Mayor Lurie Brings AI Technology to San Francisco Government, Cementing City as Global AI Leader
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie announced the rollout of Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat to nearly 30,000 city employees to enhance public service delivery. The AI tool, powered by OpenAI's GPT-4o, will support city workers, including nurses and social workers, by streamlining administrative tasks like report drafting and data analysis. This initiative positions San Francisco as one of the largest local governments globally to utilize generative AI in improving public services. Mayor Lurie highlighted the city's commitment to responsible AI use, asserting that it aligns with San Francisco's innovative culture. The San Francisco Department of Technology will collaborate with Microsoft to provide training for city employees to ensure effective use of the new tool.
Additionally, the city will work with InnovateUS to offer courses on responsible AI in the public sector. The rollout is the first phase, with plans for further developments based on employee feedback. The implementation incurs no extra costs for the city, as it utilizes an existing Microsoft license.
