Port of SF Trying to Figure Out How to Complete Crane Cove Park Improvements Without Parks Alliance Funds

San Francisco, CALocal News

The Port of San Francisco is now responsible for covering $1. 9 million in construction costs for Crane Cove Park after the SF Parks Alliance's collapse. These funds were intended for improvements such as playgrounds and a dog park, but were allegedly misused for the nonprofit's operational expenses. Port Executive Director Elaine Forbes revealed that, despite cost reductions, the Port still needs $1. 54 million, which will come from the Southern Waterfront Beautification Fund.

This funding diversion will result in fewer enhancements along the waterfront and delay the removal of old container cranes at Pier 96. A spokesperson for the Port affirmed their commitment to completing the park while seeking potential grant funding and private partnerships. The Parks Alliance previously supported various neighborhood park groups, but its leadership is under investigation for misappropriating around $3. 8 million. Sutro Stewards, another affected group, temporarily shut down but managed to reopen with community support and donations.

This situation underscores the financial challenges facing local park organizations and the need for better oversight.
