S.F. choreographer finds hope in loss with ODC premiere
KT Nelson will premiere her new ballet "Nothing is Going to Make Sense" for ODC/Dance during the Summer Sampler from July 17 to July 20, marking her first work for the company since 2017. This 23-minute piece is a reflection of her personal grief following the unexpected death of her husband, Doug Winter, in 2023. The ballet features ten dancers and incorporates music primarily by Bay Area composer Gabriela Smith, whose work resonates with Nelson's themes of loss and the climate crisis. Nelson's creative process involved deeper engagement with the dancers, exploring physical exercises and improvisation to navigate her healing journey. The ballet is structured in three sections, with the final segment set to Faure’s haunting Requiem.
Nelson highlights the duality of love and grief, stating, “Understanding my new life has been realizing that love and grief are married. ” Her choreography, known for addressing social issues, contrasts the lighthearted melodies with dark lyrics, reflecting the complexities of her journey. This new work adds to Nelson's legacy, which includes the celebrated "Velveteen Rabbit," performed annually since 1986.
