For crisis at 16th and Mission, S.F. turns to firm founded by ex-cons

San Francisco, CALocal News

Ahsing Solutions, a company founded by Arleen and Mike Luong, has implemented a daily presence in San Francisco's Mission District since July 5 to combat illegal street vending and drug use. The firm exclusively hires individuals with histories of incarceration or homelessness, believing this background enables better community engagement. The city has contracted Ahsing for six months at a cost of $498,267, with the goal of securing long-term funding for the program. Reports indicate that the initiative has already cleared areas around 16th and Mission streets, a significant achievement compared to previous efforts. Police have worked alongside Ahsing, but the organization's consistent presence has proven more effective.

Last weekend marked a notable change, with areas typically populated by drug users remaining clear. Santiago Lerma, the city’s Mission street team lead, emphasized the importance of Ahsing as a “force multiplier” in ongoing efforts. This initiative may serve as a model for addressing similar challenges in urban environments across the country.
