Oakland airport name saga resumes leaders try again to add San Francisco Bay to moniker

San Francisco, CALocal News

Oakland's Board of Port Commissioners voted unanimously to rename the airport from “San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport” to “Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport. ” Port spokesperson Kaley Skantz stated that the change prioritizes Oakland's identity and acknowledges its location on the San Francisco Bay. This decision follows a previous name change that faced legal challenges from San Francisco, which claimed that the rebranding could mislead travelers. Oakland countersued after San Francisco's initial legal action, but a judge temporarily halted the use of the new name. The Port remains confident that the new name does not infringe on San Francisco's trademark, continuing to defend its rights in ongoing litigation.

San Francisco officials expressed their disapproval, calling the move “disingenuous” and “confusing. ” A final vote on the name change is set for July 24. Regardless of the outcome, the airport's code “OAK” will remain unchanged.
