Waste collection disruption in Bay Area continues into Friday amid Teamsters strike

San Francisco, CALocal News

Workers at a Republic Services landfill in San Joaquin County expanded their strike on Wednesday, disrupting waste collection across the Bay Area. The strike, initiated by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, reflects ongoing contract negotiations for better wages and benefits, with about 8,000 Teamsters nationwide advocating for change. As of Thursday, around 2,000 workers participated in the strike or showed solidarity, impacting cities like San Jose and Union City. Republic Services, which services essential businesses, apologized for the disruptions that have affected residential and commercial pickups. Teamsters spokesperson Matt McQuaid stated the union is open to further negotiations but emphasized that the decision rests with the company.

Sean O’Brien, the Teamsters’ general president, criticized Republic Services for its compensation practices and vowed to escalate actions if necessary. Meanwhile, alternative drop-off sites have been set up in Union City to assist residents during the service interruption. The situation highlights the ongoing tensions in the labor market, particularly in the waste management sector.
