Growing pains Marin County agriculture crop values see smallest post-pandemic decline
Marin County's agricultural production value declined to $83. 8 million in 2024, a 2% drop from 2023, marking the smallest decrease in four years. Previous declines were 9% in 2023, 3% in 2022, and 5% in 2021. Despite the downward trend, agriculture contributed $257. 2 million to the local economy and supported 1,081 jobs in 2023, highlighting its ongoing importance.
Poultry remains the county's top commodity at $21. 947 million, followed closely by organic milk at $21. 638 million and cattle at $16. 1 million. Field crops saw a 7% rise, while the value of wine grapes increased by 6%.
Conversely, the value of fruits, vegetables, and nursery crops dropped by 17%, attributed to changes in business practices. The county has also launched a "Marin Farm Fresh" map to enhance visibility for local farmstands and farmers markets. This initiative aims to bolster community engagement and support for local agriculture.
