49ers plan rehab of Santa Clara youth football field ahead of major sports events
The 49ers Foundation, in partnership with the Bay Area Host Committee, plans to rehabilitate Townsend Field, linked to Buchser Middle School and home to the Santa Clara Lions Youth Football and Cheer club. This project, currently in the design phase, aims to enhance local sports facilities ahead of significant events like the FIFA World Cup and Super Bowl 60. During a recent board meeting, trustees expressed enthusiasm but raised questions about potential ongoing costs and budget implications. Trustee Michele Ryan highlighted the need for detailed financial information to better understand the project's viability. Local stakeholders, including Lions president Linda Connelly, called for specific improvements, such as maintaining natural grass and paving the track with rubber for safety.
The initiative represents one of nine projects under the Sports for All initiative, which seeks to promote equity and community engagement in sports. A spokesperson for the 49ers Foundation emphasized their commitment to providing a safe playing environment for children. As the project moves forward, trustees like Andrew Ratermann look forward to detailed proposals that clarify expectations and timelines.
