Mendocino County schools offer free summer meals for kids and families

San Francisco, CALocal News

The Free Summer Meals program by Ukiah Unified School District offers essential nutrition to students and families, addressing food insecurity among low-income households. Approximately 80% of UUSD students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, making this initiative particularly vital during the summer months. Julie Beer, UUSD’s food service coordinator, stated that meals are available to all community members without income verification, easing access to free meals. Seven locations throughout Ukiah facilitate meal distribution, ensuring that families can find convenient options regardless of where they live. This program not only provides daily nutrition but also alleviates financial burdens for families struggling to afford meals during the summer.

Beer highlighted the importance of accessibility, noting that many schools are within walking distance for families. The program will run until August 8, with some sites closing earlier on July 17. In addition to Ukiah, other areas in Mendocino County, such as Anderson Valley and Fort Bragg, also offer free summer meals, ensuring broader community support.
