Mission Science Workshop, the mad-scientist garage for San Francisco

San Francisco, CALocal News

Mission Science Workshop engages around 20,000 students annually, providing hands-on learning experiences in science and technology. Located in San Francisco's Excelsior neighborhood, the workshop focuses on creativity and experimentation for children from preschool through 12th grade. The organization collaborates with over 62 schools, with 76 percent classified as Title 1, serving low-income families. On Tinker Tuesdays and Free Saturdays, the community can explore activities like woodworking and soldering circuits. The workshop's Excelsior branch, opened in late 2013, is the largest, reflecting the neighborhood's high percentage of family households.

Despite its success, city funding cuts threaten its future, with support slashed from $550,000 to just $50,000 for the next fiscal year. Gandiaga emphasizes the need for continued educational opportunities for children in high-need communities. The workshop's innovative approach fosters a spirit of experimentation and learning that benefits local youth.
