Mayor Lurie Delivers on Key Commitment in Rebuilding the Ranks Plan, Launching New Program to Add Police Officers, Keep San Franciscans Safe During Large Events

San Francisco, CALocal News

Mayor Daniel Lurie launched the Special Events Officer Program (SEOP) to enhance police presence during major public events in San Francisco, with a specific focus on reducing mandatory overtime. This initiative emerges as the city experiences a 27% decline in overall crime, including notable decreases in property and violent crime. The SEOP will draw on recently retired officers with valid POST certification to support law enforcement during events such as the Super Bowl and FIFA World Cup. Mayor Lurie stated that full staffing is essential for effective public safety, asserting that the program will help deploy resources efficiently. SFPD Interim Chief Paul Yep called the program a practical solution to staffing challenges, allowing active-duty officers to focus on core patrol duties.

The collaboration among the Mayor, the SFPD, and the SFPOA demonstrates a unified approach to addressing public safety needs. In addition to the SEOP, the Mayor is modernizing the hiring process to attract and retain new officers. This proactive approach aims to ensure a safe environment for both residents and visitors in the city.
