Legacy SF Castro businesses asked to leave to make room for Another Planet Entertainment
The Castro Coffee Company and Castro Nail Salon, longstanding businesses in San Francisco's Castro district, face potential closure as their landlord intends to sublease their storefronts to Another Planet Entertainment. Riyad and Ken Khoury, who own the businesses, were notified that their leases would not be renewed, prompting community outcry. Supporters have rallied around the Khoury brothers, with a petition gathering 7,000 signatures urging for their businesses to remain. Although the official lease ended on June 30, both shops continue to operate, and the brothers have yet to receive eviction notices. Khoury expressed his determination to stay, stating he may consult a lawyer if eviction occurs.
The situation has garnered attention from local officials, including the mayor and neighborhood supervisor, who have been responsive to the brothers' concerns. The Khourys have built strong relationships with their customers, evidenced by long-term patron Scott Heape-Custock's testimonial. Community support and political engagement may play crucial roles in determining the future of these legacy businesses.
