Endowment will fund UC Berkeley mens aquatic sports programs for years to come

San Francisco, CALocal News

UC Berkeley received a historic $26 million donation from alumni Ned and Carol Spieker to fund the university's men’s aquatic programs, marking the largest gift in Cal Athletics history. The endowment will establish the Ned Spieker Men’s Swim Head Coach position in perpetuity and support the Ned Spieker Men’s Water Polo Head Coach position for 20 years. Men's water polo head coach Kirk Everist expressed gratitude for the donation, stating it honors the program's legacy and secures its future. Previously, the Spieker family made a $30 million commitment to the Haas School of Business, transforming the undergraduate program from a two-year to a four-year experience. UC Berkeley Chancellor Rich Lyons highlighted the commitment required from student-athletes, noting their dedication and the necessity of steadfast support.

With this latest gift, Cal Athletics now features five endowed sports, enhancing its overall athletic program. Ned Spieker is also known for founding Spieker Properties, one of the largest commercial property firms in the U. S. Carol Spieker serves as a trustee emeritus of the UC Berkeley Foundation, further demonstrating their ongoing commitment to the university.
